BUCKEYE-Wrestler, Football player, or "NUT"?

This HUGE Buckeye Tree is right in my front yard. I see it everyday. I have watched it change through 4 seasons now. Although I have known about "buckeyes" all my life. I never really knew the purpose of buckeyes. I thought a "Buckeye" was a wrestler, or football player. Well I looked up a couple of things about these "nuts". They look like you should be able to open them up and eat them, but you don't. The name buckeye came from the Indians & settlers because it resembles the eye of a buck deer. The nut has been considered a good luck charm. (That's why dad has one in his pocket, & I have one in my purse.) It is also believed to relieve arthritis and rheumatism. Today the buckeye nut is used mostly for pulp; furniture, crates, pallets, caskets, and human limbs. The leaves are large and provide a lot of shade. In the summer, those spiny seed pods grow, and now in the fall, they crack open fall to the ground and the brown nut falls out. You don't dare walk across the yard barefoot. These are sharp, spiny, poky, seed pods. Ouch! Sugar even has to tip-toe around.

VERY Interesting! I really appreicated knowing about the buckeye tree. I had no idea it grew anywhere in the west. I thought they were all in OHIO or at least the MidWest. I understand the nut is NOT edible but---

Buckeyes beat Michigan State today.

Michigan says, "A Buckeye is a round, bald, nut of no commercial value."

I thank you for more info on the Buckeye. I did get to see the tree in front of your home for the first time. I don't remember having heard why they are called buckeye nuts. Now I know. My favorite buckeyes are 1 - Gramps who wrestled on the Ohio State Championship Wrestling Team and 2- Ronna who was born in the Ohio State University Hospital so that makes her a buckeye, too.

How is your blog working? Your sidebar pictures are not coming through. And your borders are now blue and tan. Is it just my computer or is your blog out of wack?
